What is a hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment like?

What if I am claustrophobic?

Do I need a prescription for hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

How do I know hyperbaric oxygen therapy is working? How long will it take before I start to see changes in my condition?

What is a hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment like?

Prior to treatment, you will don 100% cotton scrubs and remove all metal and electronic objects. Our certified hyperbaric technician (CHT) will then help guide you into the chamber.

At the start of the treatment, or compression phase, you may feel a slight pressure in your ears, similar to what you might experience in an airplane. If at any time you feel any discomfort or pain in your ears, please alert the CHT immediately, so they can tailor the treatment to your comfort level. The CHT will provide methods for you to clear your ears. For example, yawning, stretching, and drinking water have proven successful to relieve pressure in the ears. In addition, there are special earplugs which help some people to better clear their ears.

When the prescribed treatment pressure is reached, you will begin breathing 100% medical grade oxygen through a hood or mask. During the treatment, you can sit back and relax, take a nap, watch a movie, or read. Treatment time will be dependent upon your individual prescription.

At the end of the treatment, or recompression phase, the pressure will decrease and the chamber temperature will feel cooler. You will again feel a pressure change in your ears.

Most patients find the treatment comfortable and relaxing and children see the experience as an exciting adventure.

What if I am claustrophobic?

Our multi-place chamber comfortably seats up to six people. If you have concerns prior to your treatment, we encourage you to take a look at the chamber, sit inside, and get a feel for your surroundings. In addition, you can watch movies, listen to music, or read during the treatment.

Do I need a prescription for hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Yes, a prescription is required for HBOT. You will meet with our medical director for a consultation to determine if your condition may benefit from HBOT. After a prescription is written, a series of specified treatments can be scheduled.

How do I know hyperbaric oxygen therapy is working? How long will it take before I start to see changes in my condition?

The time it takes to see results are dependent upon the condition being treated and the individual. Some conditions may see desired results within a few treatments while other conditions may require more treatments.

The patient will be assessed prior to treatment and will be asked (or their caregiver) to keep a treatment diary to document their progress and assist in the development of future treatment plans. With the authorization of the patient and/or caregiver, we will document their progress with photographs, video, and assessments.
