Sports Injuries

Men playing volleyball, sports injuries treatment: HBOTHBOT seems to be an important adjunctive treatment in the management of acute trauma and compartment syndrome as seen in sports injuries. The benefits of HBOT may include the reduction of swelling and pain, prevention of hypoxia to the traumatized tissue, decrease in healing time for tissue, ligaments, and fractured bone, reduction of scar tissue formation and damage, and the earlier return of the athletes to physical activity. The more time it takes a wound to heal, the more time scar tissue has to form and damage to occur. HBOT seems to reduce the healing time for damaged tissue, thus reducing the formation of scar tissue and residual damage.

In The Textbook of Hyperbaric Medicine, Hogrefe and Huber make the following recommendation, “Rehabilitation of an injured athlete should start right after the injury in order to acquire maximum benefits.” Additional benefits mentioned in the text include improving fracture healing and aiding in recovery from exhaustion and collapse.
